The Rare Bear range of gluten free, GMO free, vegan-friendly pestos and pasta sauces has been developed to serve increased consumer demand in Australia for high quality, full-flavour, health-conscious options for everyday pantry staples, while also catering to some common dietary requirements…with delicious results!
Did you know that food allergies or intolerances occur in around 1 in 20 children and 2 in 100 adults in Australia today? Or that the number of hospital admissions for severe allergic reactions to food (including anaphylaxis) have doubled over the last decade in Australia, USA and the UK?
These statistics come as no surprise to Michelle and Tyson Osborne, owners of The Gourmet Shelf and distributors of an all-Australian range of gourmet products. After years of listening closely to customer feedback on the products they distribute, this year they decided it was time to create their very own gourmet brand.
Recipes for the 6 pasta sauces and 6 pestos in the Rare Bear range were cooked up by Michelle Osborne in collaboration with a trained chef, during Brisbane’s COVID-19 lockdown in early 2020.
From the Tomato, Mushroom and Truffle-Infused Olive Oil pasta sauce to the Rocket & Pistachio pesto, there’s a flavour in the family-friendly Rare Bear range to suit every taste bud. With all 12 recipes given the nod of approval by both a mum and a chef, kitchen table satisfaction is guaranteed.
All Rare Bear pasta sauces & pestos are cooked in small batches for maximum flavour, using high quality ingredients. Every jar is full of flavour and free of the nasties found in so many supermarket pasta sauces and pestos. Made in Somersby on the central coast of NSW, the Rare Bear range is available for distribution Australia-wide.
Rare Bear is a family affair. From the joy of being able to serve up delicious pasta sauces and pestos that are safe for their son, who has food intolerances, to naming their brand in honour of Michelle’s brother, who lives ‘with the bears’ in Canada, the Osborne family are passionate about healthy eating, healthy living and supporting other Australian small businesses like theirs.
The Osborne family hope that Australians will continue to support small, local, family-owned business like theirs over the coming months and years, as our economy rebuilds from the impact of COVID-19.

We’re excited to be able to offer these pestos and pasta sauces to Australians as a simple, no frills, high quality, healthier option for those quick weeknight meals.
Our products do cater to some common dietary requirements, but they definitely don’t compromise taste. My personal favourite is our Sundried Tomato & Macadamia Pesto. I love featuring this on a platter as a dip with veggies, or spreading it on a sandwich. It’s all about easy ways to make something ‘everyday’, taste a little bit more gourmet!
